The Milk Grotto, a small sanctuary, situated about 300 meters uphill from the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem, is known as the “Miracle Church” for the countless miracles that are said to have happened there. People from all walks of life have testified to powerful healings and divine interventions after praying the devotion, as countless stories from believers around the world attest. It is one of the most popular shrines dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Holy Land.
A Sacred History
The story of the Milk Grotto in Bethlehem goes all the way back to the first Christians. They believed that shortly after the birth of Jesus, the Holy Family left the Grotto of the Nativity and came to this nearby cave. Thus, there is a great possibility that the Milk Grotto was the house of the Holy Family.
Here, Mary, as a nursing mother, fed the Infant Jesus. Today, the church stands as a reminder of Mary’s Divine Maternity and her role as the Mother of God. This is the church in the Holy Land that celebrates the Feast of the Mother of God—Mary’s highest title—honoring and remembering her Divine Maternity.
The Miracle Of The White Stone
On entering the grotto, on the right-hand side, there is a large piece of stone that has a reddish hue. This is believed to be the cave’s original color. It is believed that one day, while Mary was nursing, drops of her milk fell on the rock, miraculously turning it from red to white—the color of milk. This miracle gave the grotto its name, the Milk Grotto.
Luke mentions that the shepherds visited the newborn Jesus immediately after his birth in the manger, while Matthew records that the Magi came sometime later.
After the birth in the manger, Mary and Joseph may have stayed nearby—possibly in the Milk Grotto—for some time, perhaps also completing the 40 days before the presentation and purification in Jerusalem. They may have been here during the Magi’s visit.
Beyond The Nativity Scene
In Matthew 2:7–14, Saint Matthew does not write that the three kings from the East went to the manger where Jesus was born. He does not mention a barn or animals. His words are simple and clear:
“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh."
After they departed, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, warning him of Herod’s plan to kill the child. Joseph then rose at night, took Mary and Jesus, and began the flight to Egypt. In this account, the “house” Matthew describes could have been the Milk Grotto itself.
A decorative star marks the sacred spot where tradition says the vision described in Matthew 2:13–14 occurred—the moment an angel appeared to Joseph.
A Place Of Grace And Devotion
Thus, the Milk Grotto is not just a brief stop on the road to Egypt but a significant part of the Bethlehem narrative of the Holy Family’s life. Its deep connection to their presence makes it an important site in Christian devotion, where pilgrims seek Mary’s intercession for healing, believing that graces flow from this holy place when one turns to the Lord and His Mother for help.
Miracles And Testimonies Of The Pilgrims
Throughout the ages, pilgrims and faithful—especially women—have flocked to the church and prayed to the Virgin Mary to intercede on their behalf for:
- Motherhood
- Receiving a peaceful birth
- Plenty of milk when their child arrives
The powder of the white rock of the Milk Grotto represents a precious relic and is considered effective for obtaining grace.
Over the centuries, countless testimonies have been recorded, with thousands of babies born to women who had long been unable to conceive. Thousands of letters, photographs, and personal accounts now fill the shrine’s archives, bearing witness to the faith, healing, and hope found in this sacred place. These are living testimonies of the grace received and the devotion faithfully practiced.
Miracles attributed to the grotto are not limited to fertility. Visitors have also reported healings from paralysis, deafness, blindness, leukemia, and other serious illnesses after praying here in faith.
Remarkable Testimonies Include:
- Advanced Cancer Devotion: Some people have testified that they had advanced cancer and prayed this devotion for a successful surgery. When they entered the hospital, pre-operative tests showed no sign of the disease—the cancer had completely disappeared.
- Leukemia Miracle: A young girl in Haifa who was dying of leukemia was miraculously healed after her family prayed at the Milk Grotto and gave her its white powder daily during the Holy Hour.
- Italian Tour Guide's Healing: An Italian woman diagnosed with breast cancer prayed in the grotto, felt a surge of energy, and was later found cancer-free with no surgery needed.
- Breech Baby Miracle: A Maryland woman’s breech baby turned to the correct position overnight after prayer and use of the grotto’s powder.
- Uterine Cancer Disappearance: A woman from Barcelona was cured of uterine cancer after praying the novena to Our Lady of the Milk.
Prayer To Our Lady Of The Milk Grotto
Our Lady's life is entirely determined by the relationship with God and, therefore, it is a gift. From God she received her own motherhood and freely she gives this gift to those who turn to Her with faith asking for the same Grace.
This devotion is prayed every day until the baby is born.
Lovely Mother of the child Jesus and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows all my desires, all my needs. Only to you, Immaculate Virgin, has your Divine Son given to understand the feelings that fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being Mother of the Savior. Intercede now with Him, my dear Mother, so that, according to His will, I may be mother (or: mother of other children sent by the Lord). This I ask, Lady of the Milk, in the name of your Divine Son, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
Pray the Third Joyful Mystery of the Rosary — the Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem — followed by 1 Our Father and 10 Hail Marys. Ask the Virgin of the Milk Grotto to intercede with God to heal their maternal difficulty and to have a child.
